Download issues

Downloading

There are 2 common issues downloading executable files:

1. 'File not safe' type warning:

Every Browser treats executable files differently. Our files are completely safe, however the browser does not know that and so it may issue a warning message. You should first save the file to your harddrive and you can then check it with your anti-virus or anti-malware software before you run the file. Some examples of messages are listed below:

  • IE - 'Security Warning - Do you want to run or save this file?'
    Choose Save.

  • IE - 'The publisher could not be verified'
    Choose Save.

  • IE - 'xyz.exe is not commonly downloaded and could be dangerous.'
    Choose Save.
If in doubt, do not choose 'Run Anyway' - close browser, navigate to downloaded file (see 'Where was it saved?' below and scan with you anti-virus software. Once complete, double click on .exe to run it.

  • Chrome - 'xyz.exe is not commonly downloaded and could be dangerous.'
Click dropdown arrow to the right of the Discard button and select Keep.

  • Opera - 'It is not known whether this file is safe. Are you sure you want to download it?'
    Choose Save.

  • Firefox - 'You have chosen to open xyx.exe file which is a binary file. Would you like to save this file?'
    Choose Save.

2. Where was it saved? (applies to all files, not just executables)

Your browser setup may not ask you where to save a downloaded file.

  • In Chrome, click drop down arrow next to the download in bottom left corner of screen (or Ctrl + j) and select 'Show in Folder'.

  • Firefox - In Downloads window (Ctrl + j), right click download and select 'Open Containing Folder'

  • IE - In Download Complete window (Ctrl + j), click the 'Open Folder' button.

By default most browsers save downloaded files to a Folder called Downloads under My Documents or Documents.
